“Proto” was Mumdance & Logos’ debut collaborative LP, named after the “proto” period in the development of music genres, before the rules have been clearly defined and cemented. The LP focusses on the lineage of sub-genres in the UK “hardcore continuum.”
Many of the tracks on the album feature a subtle field recording of a woman making an announcement over a PA, which Mumdance recorded whilst waiting at an airport in Milan. The recording is usually turned down low in the mix, and featured in most of Mumdance and Logos’ collaborations.
Track 03, “Chaos Engine,” is named after a computer game that was released on the Commodore Amiga 500, a personal computer system Mumdance owned when he was young, which was a big influence on his music. Tracks named after Amiga games are a running theme in Mumdance’s discography, with “Golden Axe,” “Shadow Of The Beast” “Turrican II,” “Amiga 500,” and “Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge” being other examples. You can hear an extended interview where he talks about the influence of the Amiga 500 in the mix archive of this website: “Mumdance - Diggin In The Carts” with Nick Dwyer.
Track 06 “Bagleys” was named after the legendary rave venue in Kings Cross, London.
Track 08 “Return Of The Room 2 Lazer” is a play on the name of Mumdance & Logos’ 2015 track “Room 2 Lazer,” which was named after the green laser in fabric’s second room. The track was created to contribute to an 11-disc compilation, #SaveFabric, released to raise awareness and funds to re-open fabric nightclub after it was shut down by Islington Council.
Track 10 “Cold” features a sample of Mumdance’s dad starting a lawnmower.
Mumdance and Logos started working together in late 2012 and have remained firm friends ever since.
They have written a string of well received EPs and an LP together, curate a record label and events series called Different Circles and share a studio space. They cite each other as a big influence for the progression of their respective sounds.
